Can Samoyed Be A Good Guard Dog?

In many cases having a dog means having security, at least people feel that way. Of course, not all dogs are able to protect you but some of them act as real bodyguards. Is Samoyed one of them? Can Samoyed protect you, your family, your home?

Samoyed dogs are great watchdogs but providing protection is not their specialty. They are very friendly creatures by nature and that characteristic makes them terrible guard dogs. Although they will bark a lot to draw your attention, they won’t chase or attack the threat.

Is Samoyed Protective?

Samoyed dog is loyal to his humans. He is a super friendly and outgoing dog.

Being very territorial, this dog will detect any intruder and will alert you. But the truth is that he will hardly do anything more than just announce the presence of a potentially dangerous stranger.

So, Samoyed is a great watchdog. Being very talkative, you will have to recognize a variety of barking tones and to understand when the situation is serious, to act accordingly.

What Is the Difference Between Watchdogs and Guard Dog?

Watchdogs keep a close eye on your home and will alert you if an intruder comes closer. These dogs are loud, bark a lot but don’t do anything more to protect you or your property.

Guard dogs bark as well, same as watchdogs but they are involved physically in protecting you and your possessions. They will not be just loud, they will also attack, bite, hurt the intruder in order to protect you.

Take a look at the list of best guard dogs which includes the following breeds: Doberman Pinscher, German Shepard, Rottweiler, and Akita.

How do you find these breeds comparing to Samoyed? They are all larger than Samoyed and most of them were bred to serve in the military or police.

Samoyed used to be a working dog and although he is a strong mid-sized dog, he doesn’t have that aggressive trait.

Most of the owners agree that their Sammies would most probably greet the intruder, try to play with him instead to play harshly and get rid of him.

Is Samoyed Aggressive Dog?

Although Samoyed dogs were herding and chasing other animals, they were never violent. Aggression is not in their nature. So it’s highly unlikely that Samoyed bites or scratches someone.

Of course, it’s doesn’t mean that this scenario could never happen, Samoyed is just a dog, after all. If he finds himself in a dead-end situation, he will try to defend himself. In that case, he might bite/hurt a person or animal.

But naturally, these dogs are not aggressive, and attacking humans is not in their DNA.

Can I Train My Samoyed To Be A Guard Dog?

Well, yes, you can train your dog to be anything but the real question is do you really want that.

Samoyed dogs are not good guard dogs and that’s a fact. Although they won’t jump on intruders they can bark very loud.

If you add that voice to that mid-sized fluffy body, the whole picture might be pretty intimidating for a stranger.

So unless you live in some very dangerous neighborhood, the protection that Samoyed can offer you could be just enough.

If you do insist on training Samoyed to become a guard dog, do it but don’t regret it later.

Samoyed doesn’t have an aggressive trait but he is prone to destructive behavior. Ok, not to towards people, but towards things such as furniture, shoes, clothes, purse and other similar things.

However, destructive behavior usually develops if you leave Sammy alone for too long so he gets bored and depressed. If he has enough of your attention, as well as physical activity and mental stimulation, gnawing your favorite shoes or expensive leather purse won’t even cross his mind.

In case you train your Sammy to become a guard dog and you try to make this peaceful and friendly breed aggressive, don’t be surprised if he starts destroying things around the house just for fun.

Conclusion

Samoyed dogs are great pets, sincerely devoted dogs that adore their humans. They will also alert you when they notice anything strange or possibly dangerous but you cannot expect them to protect you physically as they are simply not aggressive canines and won’t attack a threat.
