Can ferrets wear clothes ?
Obviously yes! But how to put clothes on your furry friend that is totally different question. To be honest with you, it will not be easy. Ferrets are very flexible and fast-moving creatures and above all they do not understand fashion. So you have to be patient and be prepared that they can easily get rid of clothes after all your effort. If you notice that your ferret is not a fan of clothing do not waste money on that.
Do ferrets really need clothes ?
Well, no! Dressing a ferret is more matter of fashion and the owner’s desire than the need of animals. The nature already gave your pet perfect clothing, nice and cozy fur coat that protects it from cold and other things.
On certain occasions dressing a ferret can be justified. For example if your pet is recovering from some injury or surgery clothes can give it a bit more protection. Also some ferret owners agree that is some cases when ferret suffers from Adrenal disease and loses fur, some nice coat could be helpful to provide protection.
What part of cloths you can buy /make for your ferret ?
The choice is really wide. From simple t-shirts, coats, sweaters to dresses, jackets, caps….. anything that you imagine. But you must know that if you have ferret which allows you to put some clothes on it ( because not every ferret would be nice enough to let you do that )do not abuse that and leave your ferret in the coat whole day.
The reason is that if your small friend wears clothes for a longer period its skin will be become dry and will have issues with skin and fur, so it is not healthy at all. Its skin needs to breathe and not to be covered constantly.
Where you can buy the ferret clothes ?
You can find something suitable online, you have a lot of advertising sites for animal clothing. Some you will find in pet stores and also if you do not have enough money or you do not want to pay the price of the new clothes you can find second-hand clothes online.
But be careful with second-hand clothes, you need to know in what condition is the item you want to buy and even more important the health of ferret that wore that item before. This is really crucial as you do not want your pet to get some skin problems or some other health issue. Just in case do wash any clothing item before you dress your pet.
If you check internet you will find that prices of ferrets clothes may vary. T-shirts, dresses,sweaters can be bought for 5-15$ ( average price, depends on the brand ), hats and caps are less expensive 3-7$. In case you decide to make ferrets clothes by yourself
Ok, for this you need some sewing skills, know-how, and some fabric. If you decide to make the outfit for your ferret by yourself I am sure you have nice ideas and good imagination.
Before take you start sewing,it is recommend to measure the ferret first, but people who have these furry balls know how hard that can be. Ferrets are very lively animals with flexible bodies and do not have time to stay still and wait you to take measures.
However you should try but I will share with you general measures I found in case your pet does not allow you to do the measuring. The length of the sweater should be around 7 inches and neck part around 6 inches. The space between front legs should be about 2,5-3 inches and 9 inches for waistline.
Few ideas for making a sweater for your ferret:
Take an old sock( it can be either cotton or wool ),cut the toes and then cut the sock in the part where the heel should be. This way you get two separate materials and you can make t-shirts for two ferrets! Take one half of the sock and fold it in half, cut it to make armholes ( cut should be made on the non-folded side) and you get a perfect outfit for your furry pal. You can also consider using toe portion, you can sew it to the T-shirt and get great hood.
Same as sock, you can use a sleeve of old sweater,only in that case you do not have toe potion for the hood.
Just be aware of one thing – ferrets like to chew things, so be careful if you put some buttons or small bells or whatever ferret can find attractive to chew.
Also bear in mind that your ferret is quick,it is constantly moving, do not put some decorative elements that could snag to the cage and become an obstacle in its every day activity
One advise – as any other thing your ferret is using – bedding ,litter box , toys …. clothes also need to be washed from time to time to avoid bad smell but also to remove possible germs and bacteria which can jeopardize your pet .
