How Much Food Does Your Maltipoo Really Need?

Many Maltipoo parents believe that their dogs barely eat ( because of the portion size)but did you know that small dogs including Maltipoos need more calories than larger dogs since they have a higher metabolic rate? Plus small dogs are not doing well if left with an empty stomach. So how much food do these small dogs really need?

Adult Maltipoo dogs need between 1/2 to 1 cup per day. The exact amount depends on Maltipoo’s age( older dogs need a lighter diet), weight, and lifestyle.

How Much Food Should I Feed A Maltipoo?

The amount of food your Maltipoo needs on daily basis is an important question. Without knowing how much food your Maltipoo really needs you cannot be sure if he is eating enough and taking all necessary nutrients.

In order to discover how much food should you feed Maltipoo let’s talk about anatomy first. Your dog’s stomach has one miraculous feature. When it is empty, it’s very small. But as your dog starts to eat, his stomach expands so it can receive all that food. An enlarged stomach can weigh a maximum of 7,5% of your dog’s body weight. When the food is digested and on its way out, the stomach shrinks again.

So if you have a Maltipoo that weighs 10 Lb, his stomach is full when he eats 0,75 Lb of food. If you have a larger Maltipoo, 15 lb in weight, he can eat more as expected. His stomach is full when he eats 1,1 lbs.

If you like to count calories, an adult Maltipoo needs 40 calories per each pound of his body weight a day but be careful as puppies need more ( 50 calories per every pound of body weight a day) and seniors prefer lighter food and smaller portions as they need 35 calories per every pound of the bodyweight per day.

Bear in mind that portion size and calories depend on activity level, health condition of the dog, and age.

But if the servings are too big, your dog will leave the food every time as it cannot eat that much. It doesn’t mean that is anything wrong with him. Adjust the portion to the size of your dog and see what happens. This way you won’t waste food and will stop worrying if your Maltipoo eats enough food.

How Much Food Should I Feed My Maltipoo Puppy?

Bear in mind that very young puppies ( 1-2 months old ) need to have food available at all times. Older puppies ( 3-12 months old) should eat at least 3 times a day with some treats in between main meals.

Young puppies have tiny stomachs so the portions shouldn’t be big. Maltipoo puppy usually eats 1/4 to 1/2 cups per day, again depending on the puppy’s weight.

When you bring a Maltipoo puppy from a breeder make sure you feed it with the same food the breeder did. Young Maltipoos have a very sensitive stomachs so if you want to avoid intestine problems keep the same food. After several weeks when your puppy has adjusted to a new family start introducing a new food, slowly and gradually by mixing it with the old brand. This process should be done in one week period. If your puppy develops any signs of digestive problems, do contact the vet as soon as possible.

As previously said puppies need more calories than adult Maltipoos. Therefore choose high-quality brands, specially designed for puppies. Avoid food based on generic meat, artificial additives, and fillers.
