How To Play With My Pomeranian? (Useful Tips)

Pomeranians are very playful dogs and will play with almost anything. These vivacious little dogs have a lot of energy to spend and what’s the better way to spend it than playing with you.

There is a great variety of games you can play with your Pomeranian. If you stay inside you can choose between hallway and staircase fetch or you can stimulate his brain and senses with a dog treat puzzle toy.

If the weather is perfect and you are more into the outdoor adventure the choice is immense: from a simple walk or a bike ride to a dog park visit. Play fetch, go hiking or teach your Pom a new trick. Don’t forget that the Pomeranian breed is a bit spoiled and likes to be pampered so spend some time in the Doggy spa with your Pom.

Just always bear in your mind that Poms are small and fragile dogs, no matter how sturdy and big their personality is. Another thing you should remember is that your Pom most probably will tire sooner than you. Make sure fresh water is always available for your Pom.

What Are The Best Indoor Games To Play With My Pomeranian?

Hide and Seek game or Treasure Hunt

The point is to hide something your Pom really likes. That can be his /her favorite toy or some kind of treat. Don’t let the dog sees where are you going to hide the ”treasure”. Once you hide it, use the same command phrase: ”go get it” or ”go find it”

You can also be a ”treasure”. If there is someone who can hold your Pom in another room, you can hide and let your dog find you.

Whatever is the ”treasure” do praise your dog and give him some treats.

One of the variations of these games is also the ”Which hand” game. Hide a treat in one hand and ask your Pom to guess in which hand the treat is hidden.

Play Fetch Inside

It’s not impossible! You two can play fetch inside as well. Depends on the place you play, it’s called hallway or staircase fetch

There is not much to say about this game except is very funny, both for you and your Pom. The thing is that your Pom will get the exercise he needs plus he will spend a great time with you.

Note that if you have wood flooring, your Pom will slide for sure. Although It’s funny to watch it, be careful that he doesn’t slide too hard in the wall or some piece of furniture. He might end up hurt.

There is another thing you can do with a ball inside. You can throw the ball against the wall and encourage your Pomeranian to catch it on the rebound. You can also bounce it off the floor and tell him to catch the ball on the first bounce.

Tug of War

It’s a very famous game, many owners are practicing with their dogs. There are certain myths around it that bring negative connotations to very useful and funny activity.

Some people think that this game might make your dog aggressive or dominant towards you but it’s totally reverse.

If you play this game as it should, your dog will become more obedient. This game is a great way to build a relationship with your dog and also a great way to tire him out.

You can play it with a stick or a rope. The important thing is to let your dog win every round. Letting him win won’t you just make him more interested in the same game next time.

Always use two items for this game ( toy, rope, sticks). Tempt your dog with rope number one and see if he will grab it. Let your dog win in the first round with almost no effort. Then start teasing him with rope number 2 until he drops rope number 1. Let him grab rope number 2. And so on.

The point is that he mustn’t touch your skin with his teeth. If this happens, the game is over. He must learn that he shouldn’t be hurting you.

Shell Game

An excellent way to stimulate your Pom’s brain and his sense of smell. Ask someone to hold your dog in another room while you prepare this game. Take several plastic cups and place the treat under one of them.

Call your Pom and ask him to find where the treat is. Of course, once he does, praise him and let him eat the treat he has found.

Obstacle/Agility Course

Great indoor activity that will engage your Pom for some time. Also, an excellent exercise that will stimulate both your Pom’s brain and muscles.

Set up a row of obstacles and let the play begin. You can make short tunnels (put two dining chairs together and cover them with a blanket or you can use a small table). The next one could be a very low table, like a coffee table under which your Pom could crawl.

Zig zag obstacle is also a great way to entertain your Pom. Set up a row of smaller obstacles like boxes, chairs, or even shoes and encourage your Pom to zig-zag through the obstacle. At the end make sure some nice treat is waiting for your pet.

You can put all the obstacles together, tunnels, some small chairs on which your Pom can jump, low tables, zig-zag obstacles plus you can add some stairs and you will get a hell of a party for your furry friend.

Teach Your Pom Different Tricks

You can use indoor time to teach your dog different things.

Teach him the names of his toys and then you can ask him to go and find those toys. After this, you can also ask your dog to clean up his toys. Once he finds the toy, he should put it in for example a box for doggy toys.

Teach your dog new commands like go sit there or go grab a leash or something like that.

Also, interactive toys are great entertainment for the indoors. Dog treat puzzle toys, Kong toy, etc will keep your Pom occupied and happy.

What Are The Best Outdoor Games To Play With My Pomeranian?

Outdoor activities are also numerous. From a very simple walk around the block to dog park visits and socializing with other dogs.

Playing Fetch

Playing fetch outside is a great way to tire out your dog. Just bear in mind that Pomeranians are small dogs and although being very energetic canines they don’t need so many activities like some other larger breeds.

Obstacle Course

Some games you play inside can be played outside as well. Obstacle course for example you can make it in your own yard and provide great fun and exercise to your Pom.

Chasing Bubbles

Some dogs really like to chase bubbles. This game could bring a lot of fun. If you have kids you can use their bubble-making toys although there is a great variety of those toys made for pets. The bubbles for kids are nontoxic so you can freely enjoy them with your Pom.

Hiking

I guess hiking never crossed your mind as your Pom is so small that you cannot imagine that he can enjoy in this activity.

I also guess that you forgot that Pomeranian dogs used to be working, sled dogs and that they still have a lot of energy to spend. So hiking could be one of the ways to do it.

However, you need to take your Pom’s size into consideration and find some nice and mild trails, not too long of course.

The good thing about Poms and hiking is that you can carry them easily once they become tired and continue hiking. Bring a dog bag along with some water and food. Don’t forget the pet first aid kit just in case

Hiking experience definitely will help in making the tighter bond between you too.

Follow the Leader

This is a very simple game, you can play both indoors or outdoors, but maybe the yard is a better place than your room for it.

Start running and let your dog chase you. Simple as that. You can also walk and not run, commanding your dog to follow you. Start slowly and watch if your Pom is moving in the same direction you do.

Bike Ride

If you and your family like to ride bikes, it will be good to share all that experience with your Pom. Get the bike trailer for dogs and go for a fun ride with your pet.

Water Fun

During hot summer days, you can organize some water fun. Purchase a small dog pool and install it in your yard. You can encourage your Pom to get in and grab the ball you have just thrown.

Turn on the sprinkler for some additional fun. Watch your cheerful dog run back and forth!

Doggy Spa

Pomeranians were staple pets in high society (18th and 19th century) and they are a little bit spoiled nowadays. So why not pamper your Pom in one of the many doggy spas.

These places offer a variety of services, from simple grooming (that includes relaxing baths) to massage therapies and a unique dog pool/swimming experience. Search for a nearby doggy spa and give your Pom one soothing day out.

Other Activities

There are a lot of activities that you can share with your Pom and which are not strictly designated for dogs.

For example, share a meal in a pet-friendly restaurant. Go visit a pet-friendly winery ( I heard that there are a lot of pet-friendly wineries in Virginia, California and New York)

Go get some fun on a pet-friendly beach. You can also go camping and afford your Pom a unique experience.

Fire up the grill you watch your Pom how does he run around you waiting for a delicious bite.

Rent a boat on the lake. If your Pom doesn’t have a problem with water, this could be a very fun activity for all of you.

How To Play With My Pomeranian Puppy?

You can play the same games with Pomeranian puppies as with adult Pom but you first need to teach your puppy how to do certain things.

Also, you need to train your puppy, to teach him to follow the basic commands.

For example, if you want to play a hide and seek game, you will have to go and seek the hidden item the first couple of times. Let your puppy watch what are you doing and you search it on several spots until you finally discover it.

After some time, your puppy will learn what is expected for him, so he will be able to seek it on his own.

It’s super important for puppies to go through obedience training as well as potty training. Socialization is the key.

You can also enroll your puppy in kindergarten classes where he will learn many things plus will be around other dogs which will be very helpful in terms of socialization.

Once your dog learns basic commands, knows how to behave with humans and other dogs, listens to you, and is eager to please you, you can play different games and have a lot of fun.
